COOL OFF WITH THE TOP CHILL MUSIC OF THE WEEK

It’s an absolute scorcher out there! Fear not, however, as We Are: The Guard is here to help you cool off this Friday with the latest edition of Top Chill Music. If you’re currently sweating in places you didn’t even realize you could sweat, the team and I hope these tracks significantly bring down your body temperature – perhaps to the point you can take a walk this weekend without feeling like your thighs are categorically devouring each other! WASHED OUT – PARALYZED

Chillwave pioneer Washed Out brings to life an all-consuming love on his luscious latest single “Paralyzed.” Lifted from his recent album Purple Noon, “Paralyzed” is a tantalizing haze of a song about yearning for another’s touch, with Ernest Greene’s blurry vocals completely pulling us under as he sings about being paralyzed with desire.

GOTH BABE – MOMENTS / TIDES

Surf’s up on the glistening latest single from Goth Babe. “‘Moments / Tides’ is a song I wrote at the beginning of the surf season here in Oregon,” reveals Griffin Washburn of the tranquil, dappling odyssey, with glitched-out samples and sparkling guitars wreathing with Goth Babe, whose voice will send you gliding across the azurean waves.

FINNEAS – LET’S FALL IN LOVE FOR THE NIGHT (1964)

Coinciding with the release of the deluxe edition of his EP Blood Harmony, FINNEAS has shared the “1964” version of “Let’s Fall in Love for the Night.” As the title suggests, the remix finds the California crooner adopting a more old-school sound, with FINNEAS stripping the ballad of a beat to instead evoke the jazzy, moony lullabies of Bruno Major.

GOLDEN VESSEL (FEAT. MALLRAT) – LITTLEBITWILD

Australian upstarts Golden Vessel and Mallrat come together as one on “littlebitwild.” Produced alongside The Nicholas, it’s a delightfully sweet listen built around scintillant guitar loops and playfully impish vocal exchanges, with Golden Vessel explaining the song is lyrically about caring for someone “even through the chaos and poor decisions.”

SURF MESA (FEAT. GUS DAPPERTON) – SOMEWHERE

Just in time for what feels like the hottest weekend ever, Surf Mesa has shared the radiant, lustrous “Somewhere.” The follow-up to “ily (i love you baby)” hears Powell Aguirre really getting into his groove as a producer, with the 20-year-old throwing down a funky bassline, over which Gus Dapperton delivers a deceivingly deep ode to despair.

NO ROME (FEAT. BEARFACE) – 1:45AM

Dirty Hit’s No Rome is heading for the city lights on the intoxicating “1:45AM.” The follow-up to “Hurry Home” is an ideal accompaniment to a late-night drive through a metropolis of skyscrapers and tower blocks, with garage beats propelling the song forward as No Rome sings about a love so potent, it makes him feel like he’s dying.

RYAN HEMSWORTH (FEAT. LELAND WHITTY) – KEEP TOUCH

Ryan Hemsworth is taking us to Arcadia on “Keep Touch.” The first single to be unveiled from the Canada producer’s forthcoming EP Pout is an idyllic instrumental featuring BADBADNOTGOOD’s Leland Whitty, with Ryan’s atmospheric chimes interthreading with Leland’s smooth saxophone to evoke a place of rustic beauty and quiet pleasure.

MARINELLI – HALLOWEEN

Meet marinelli, the up-and-coming indie artist who’s completely won us over with “Halloween.” Despite what the title suggests, there’s nothing remotely ghoulish about this song, with marinelli instead bringing together sunny guitars and lo-fi beats for an entirely disarming ode to disconnection and crippling loneliness. ROE – I LIKE

She’s written songs for everyone from Usher to Mary J. Blige, but ROE is finally putting her own name in the spotlight with “I Like.” The song finds the California native putting a fresh, contemporary spin on the 90s R&B classic “I Like the Way (Kissing Game)” by Hi-Five, with ROE’s dexterous vocal runs caressing the silken, sultry beats with ease.

SALUTE – SYL

We Are: The Guard favorite salute is meeting at the intersection of chill and danceable on his latest single “SYL.” Featured on Felix Navo’s recent EP lyali, “SYL” is a dreamlike bop from the first note to the very last, with high-energy beats blending with illusory vocal samples to form a sound that resembles the more lush escapades of Four Tet.
