BEST NEW TRACKS: BISHOP BRIGGS - BABY

Bishop Briggs newest single “Baby” seemingly answers the question: What would happened if you replaced the baked in darkness and misogyny of a Lana Del Rey track and replaced it with levity and vulnerability?

This pop number is about recognizing the flaws and insecurities in your partner and loving them in spite of it. There’s also some talk of zombie apocalypse, black magic (not the Jarvis Cocker song), Gucci shoes, and Juicy Fruit, but the heart of the song is about a blossoming relationship.

“Baby” takes a lighter tone than much of Briggs debut LP Church of Scars. The 2018 record was a more somber affair that echoed the music of Banks, LDR, and the like, but here she sounds far more like early Charli XCX than her usual influences. Lyrically this is probably Briggs most straightforward track today. The singer recently admitted to trying to be more open in her music instead of hiding behind complicated metaphor and artistic distractions. She initially felt like “Baby” was too private of a song to share with the unwashed masses.

Thankfully though she eventually changed her mind. Summing up the track, Briggs had this to say about its message:

“I am learning that in order to love someone else you have to love yourself, I feel that imperfections have a way of really showing you who someone is.”

“Baby” is about giving up yourself up to new love even in the face of uncertainties or once the other parties warts have been revealed. As the main refrain goes,

“Yeah he’s fucking crazy but he’s still my baby.”

A sentiment we’ve all felt a time or three in our lives.

BISHOP BRIGGS - BABY

Real name Sarah Grace McLaughlin, the London-born Los Angeles-based singer decided to take her stage name from her family’s hometown: Bishopbriggs, Scotland. She initially went by BISHOP but apparently people kept getting confusing her with the metal band of the same name.
