TOP NEW SONGS: BILLIE EILISH - YOU SHOULD SEE ME IN A CROWN
Billie Eilish comes from a family or actors, musicians, and screenwriters. At the tender age of 16 she already had bragging rights over them all. Her latest single "you should see me in a crown” further cements her status as the family superstar.
Born Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell* to parents Maggie Baird and Patrick O'Connell, whose IMDB pages is surely more impressive than your mum and dad, Billie joined the Los Angeles Children’s Choir at 8 and started writing and performing her own songs at age 11. Her older brother Finneas is a musician and actor as well. And while you may have heard of her family members, seen them in television or movies, or enjoy works that they have written, they are but street lights compared to this burgeoning supernova.
Her dreamy debut single “Ocean Eyes” went viral and as of writing has been played over 87 million times. For comparison sake, the summer that I was 16 my crowning achievements were being the second guard off the bench for my high schools varsity summer league basketball team, and being a superior Mario Kart player to all my friends (to be fair, there wasn’t a ton of folks in the competition).
And while “Ocean Eyes” is fantastic for what it is, "you should see me in a crown” is so so so much more. It’s a bombastic announcement of one’s arrival, a prophecy, a threat, and an infectious off-kilter pop song all rolled into one. And if that wasn’t enough, it’s also the best new response when someone says they think you’re attractive.
In many ways this song exudes a typical teenage fantasy: just wait, soon I’ll be running this whole game and all no one will be able to tell me anything and all the haters will be able to do is genuflect at my greatness. (This is also an adult fantasy, see “Can’t Tell Me Nothing”.)
The confidence and swagger Billie displays here though make it seem more like something she’s speaking into existence rather than a youthful daydream.
BILLIE EILISH - YOU SHOULD SEE ME IN A CROWN
"you should see me in a crown” is the lead single off Billie Eilish’s currently untitled debut record, slated for release sometime this year.
With this as an opening statement I can’t wait to hear what is the next.
*I got this from Wikipedia and after some cross-referencing can confirm that Pirate is an actual part of homegirl's name.
Calvin Paradise is not any one thing. The half-hearted vagabond and forgetful luddite currently resides in Los Angeles and how he spends his time is none of your damned business.
