BEST NEW INDIE POP: LXANDRA - FLICKER

4/17/17

We hate to break it you, but there is something inevitable that comes with living: Everything eventually comes to an end. Every second that passes, you creep closer to each end, whether it's a relationship or your lifespan. This is the blunt message, riddled with anxiety, that Helsinki native Lxandra delivers in "Flicker": "Run for the door/ Go / What are you waiting for?"

LXANDRA - FLICKER

And she stays pretty loyal to her chosen existential theme throughout the ballad's dramatic 4-plus minutes. "Flicker" opens with a rhythmic ticking like a clock, matched by snaps and sweet piano keys.

A bit over three minutes in the keys are overtaken by amplified echoing electric booms, igniting out of nowhere and skyrocketing like a flair gun to emphasize the core line over and over again: "Time is a killer."

She has the kind of theatricality that reminds us of Florence and The Machine with the thick-coated husk akin to Wild Belle's Natalie Bergman—that's an epic recipe for success in the age of the music festival resurgence.
