NEW EDM - WEEK 21 2014

5/20/14

Hi, how are you this week? What did you do yesterday? Did you party really hard at a pool party? Did you drink 19 mimosas at brunch? Did you sleep till 2 cause you were out till 5 on Saturday night? No matter what you did, the weekend is over and it's Monday.

SUUUUCKS.

To quote Garfield: "I really hope these tracks make you feel better and brighten your day because music is life and Mondays are the least of all the days." I'm just kidding. That isn't a Garfield quote, it's Proust.  :)

Okay… here they are!

GESAFFELSTEIN - PURSUIT

Gesaffelstein is playing LA this week! Gesaffelstein live at the Fonda on Thurs and Fri and holy shit that place is gonna be fucking wild. The King of Dark Techno, just fucking chain smoking cigarettes on stage while everyone gets DOWN on this play, is sure to be the highlight of the week for every single person at those shows. Pursuit is already in the history books. Let's let it play out heavy on one last tour.

NERO - SATISFY

Oh cute Nero, you're trying to do some Gesaffelstein shit, huh? I'm placing these songs back to back so you can see the similarities and the differences. They've got the same heavy, pounding drums and synths, it's as if Nero is trying to do some Gessa shit, but with like 1/10th of the production quality. I guess it's cool to see Nero taking a new direction, trying to innovate, agreeing with society that dubstep is dead.

MOWE - MAKE ME FEEL GOOD

This song isn't going to blow up the club, but it's very light and pretty and belongs on some 19 year old girl's deep house mix tape. It's got the MK piano-house thing going for it (that NO ONE else seems to be using) and some chick with a wonderful voice singing the Stardust lyrics. They look like young kids, making music they believe in and having fun doing it. That something I can get behind.  I'll keep listening and see what comes next.

YOGI - BURIAL FEAT. PUSHA T

Hell Yeah. Pusha T has such a positive understanding of dance music. He'll hop on a track that isn't a perfect hip-hop instrumental and turn it into a hip-hop banger. Yogi uses those TNGHT horn samples here, but outside of that, these sounds are basically unclassifiable. Kanye taught Pusha T well. Never stop experimenting. Never stop working with cool new people. Good work, ye.  Glad we have this track.

A-TRAK + MILO & OTIS - OUT THE SPEAKERS FT. RICH KIDZ

In the same week that A-Trak gets to work with his idol and releases his Dipset track, he also releases the most generic festival trap shit I've heard. This is such a disappointment.

FIGURE - FRIDAY THE 13TH

Okay, maybe dubstep isn't dead. It's just hibernating. I really appreciate that Figure sticks to his guns and is like, "fuck you, I make dubstep. I'm not gonna hop on some new train just 'cause this one isn't so popular anymore." The Friday the 13th samples are great here. I really hope this helps Figure score a new remake or something. That'd be pretty fucking awesome. Where are the ki-ki-ki ma-ma-ma samples though, dude???

THE DISCO FRIES - COOL WITH THE MOLOKO RHYTHM [DISCO FRIES BOOTLEG]

The Disco Fries are clearly very talented in studio editors. They very seamlessly turned three tracks into one. It certainly helps that I didn't know any of these songs to begin with but I don't know if I would have even been able to guess that these were multiple tracks. That being said, fuck bootlegs. Do this shit live and then you'll be real heroes.

POSIJ - MISFITS

Hell Yeah! Drum & Bass w/ Booty Bass sounds!!! This is new! This is the shit! Thanks for releasing it on Division, Noisia. Count me in on Drum & Booty Bass. More! More! More!

ROBYN & ROYKSOPP - DO IT AGAIN (MOULLINEX REMIX)

Hmmmm-- let's take a Robyn & Royksopp and make it weirder, huh? Awesome, Moullinex. I'll take it and one hundred more please. This track was awesome as it was, but now you made it epic and minimal at the same time. COOL, FOOL.

J. RABBIT - PYRAMID SCHEME

Is that Henry Rollins talking on the track? I hope so. I hope I'm able to recognize Henry Rollins' voice like it's my job. This track is a lot of fun. Some high pitched future trap. I hadn't heard J. Rabbit before this track, but I'd seen the name everywhere. It's nice to be able to put a name to a face (sound). This shit's good. I'm sure that Kurt from 2012 would have been all about this shit. Kurt from 2014 is still cool with it too though. So that ain't nothing.

ALESIA - ACII

I love Alesia. I like to call him baby Gesaffelstein. He's making dark techno in the same way. He has cool, angular ideas that are dark and hit super heavy. I mind this significantly less it's coming from Alesia (a young upstart) than Nero (been around the block.) I'm excited to Alesia tear the fuck out of Hard Summer. Every track he's released has been fucking awesome. ACII u there?

PROXY - 10,000

Or like alternately, Gesaffelstein is the single most influential figure in all of dance music right now.

DJ DODGER STADIUM - LOVE SONGS

This first team-up of Body High bosses Samo Sound Boy and Jerome LOL definitely doesn't disappoint. This beautiful experimental deep club banger is gonna be thee official summer anthem of LA. Everything about it. LA Label. LA music video. Named after an LA landmark. It's a goddamn wonderful time to live in this city, and the music coming out of it.

TOMMY TRASH - LORD OF THE TRANCE

Follow me on this one for a minute. You have this friend, he's a really great guy. Really mellow, really fun, really sweet dude. You leave your friend for the summer and come back to find that he's completely changed. He wears exclusively black and hates the world and you ask if his parents got divorced and he just tells you to "mind your own business, dickwad." BUT his parents didn't get divorced or anything, they're still happy together. "What happened to Brian?" you ask everyone but no one knows.

- KURT

About Kurt Kroeber

From deep within the murky depths of the Los Angeles River emerged a creature: 50% raver, 50% comedian, 10% Robotcop. Kurt Kroeber doesn’t own a dog, operates Soundbleed (the world’s only dance party comedy talk show rave), and is down to party with you. Come up some time and say “Hey dude!” But definitely make sure to casually drop the secret Illuminati password.
