BEST NEW TRACKS: YOUNG THE GIANT "CRYSTALLIZED"

One of the breakout bands of this young decade, Young the Giant, is set to release their sophomore effort next year. The first offering from Mind Over Matter is top new song, "Crystallized."

Just like on their much loved self-titled debut, the hooks on "Crystallized" come early and often, and are as soaring as you remember. This is same brand of swelling, infectious indie guitar rock that landed these guys on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Sameer Gadhia's vocals soar from the jump of "Crystallized," showing range that's the envy of pop singers the world round. The guitar and very well placed synth line rise and crash along with the tremendous vox track, creating what's sure to be one of the best bits of arena rock for 2014.

If there is a downside to "Crystallized," it's the lyrical content. A kind and accurate take would be that it's just a trite celestial love song, and that the music and vocal performance are what matters here. This is true, but if the hook of your song is, "When the beat of my of drum, meets the beat of your heart," and you keep that drum motif throughout the entire chorus, shouldn't the drums at least be audible in the mix? Turn them shits up already. Seriously. And can we stop it already with the fucking heart-as-a-drum metaphor? We get it. Music is very personal to you and you use it to explain your world. Most of us intrinsically understand that's why you're in a band. Let's move on, already.
