TOP NEW SONGS: SWIMMING GIRLS - 2 KIDS
Regardless of the swirl of controversies that have surrounded Courtney Love throughout her career, no one can deny how influential her voice has been on female musicians. The lead singer of Swimming Girls, Vanessa Gimenez, is one who is clearly taking cues from Love. Her bleach blonde messy bob hangs slightly over her charcoal-smeared eyes and she fashions herself in 90s-style floral baby doll dresses.

Giminez's voice is a nod to the Hole frontwoman too—a wild, soaring growl. She also surrounds herself with a band of men and it's all, so far, working well for her. Though, despite all their similarities, the band is doing well at carving out their own way. What we've heard so far is vibrant and lush dream-pop veiled in darkness. The four-piece's latest song is called "2 Kids" and its a hazy tale about unrequited love. It's nostalgic and innocent--like a Polaroid of a teenage first love that is faded from age and has been bent and ripped to shreds. Now all they have are glimmering, romanticized memories: "Diamonds in our eyes / It's like we've seen each other for the first time."
They are just diving into the music scene, but with such thoughtful lyrics and notable style, they're already making quite a splash.
