NEW ARTIST: WOLF
If you tried making a list of all the things you’d like to say to that one person who absolutely irritates you, it might look something like “Captions” by Wolf (but significantly less witty and eloquent).
WOLF - CAPTIONS
New York native Wolf doesn’t waste any time in her one minute long single, packing a punch with every line. Within seconds, she comes in with “You should throw in the towel / you just don’t know better,” affirming that she’s not someone to be messed with. Lines like “I did you favors without asking; when the tables turn, shoot me down like assassin,” demand attention. Its short length and non-traditional structure makes “Captions” easy to listen to over and over and over again.
The clever rhymes and poetic burns are supported by tasteful production from Loote’s Jackson Foote. While we hear moments of his keys-driven-pop style, we’re also introduced to a hip-hop and trap inspired sound that varies from his previous work. One of my least favorite production choices is when a song has gang vocals, harmony, or double vocals over the whole thing in a way that doesn’t serve it, but this is a strength for Foote, and “Captions” does not disappoint. The moments with harmony, contrasted by the moments without are so effective. The most searing lines are sung in a single voice, and directly address the other person.
While “Captions” is Wolf’s only released song, her Instagram is full of other originals. The songs are equally as brave and even blend English and Itallian, proving why Wolf is someone to look out for.
