NEW ARTIST FINDS: SOFI DE LA TORRE
“I’m Sofi. I make music and eat burgers,” is the first thing you see when you go to her official website, so I automatically thought this girl was awesome. Sofi De La Torre is a Spanish singer/songwriter currently spending time in London and we don’t really know much else. According to her Facebook page, she’s been making music since 2011 and her genre is “pop done right” (and I’d have to agree with her). Her songs are a refreshing blend of piano and electronic elements that make her stand out from the sea of electro-pop acts that have been flooding the internet this past year. But enough of what I have to say, let’s get on with the music!
SOFI DE LA TORRE - VERMILLION
This was the first track I heard from Sofi, and it made me fall in love with her instantly. "Vermillion" begins with quirky electronic elements, before going into a dancey yet dark, electro-pop vibe. The lyrics grabbed me right away, with lines like “I love these streets but they were meant for me to walk/ I love the people but they never seem to want to talk.” The video is great as well, featuring her walking around (what appears to be) downtown LA with lots of shots of liquor stores and pay phones which compliments the song perfectly.
SOFI DE LA TORRE - NOIR (FEATURING HUNNIT)
“Noir” (featuring Hunnit) is a little more stripped down than “Vermillion” at first, featuring simple piano notes but electronic beats as well. Things change about half way through the song after Hunnit drops his verse, and the song really takes off with loud and energizing electronic elements before ending almost abruptly. The song changes throughout, making it an entertaining ride.
SOFI DE LA TORRE - THE MONEY MA$HUP
“The Money Ma$hup” is a piano medley of her covering both Rihanna’s “Pour It Up” and Sam Smith’s “Money On My Mind.” I gotta admit, I think I might like her versions of both songs better than the originals (sorry RiRi, you know I still love you). Plus it all showcases her talents as a both a singer and a pianist. Great cover!
