BEST NEW TRACKS: ELLIE GOULDING - TAKE ME TO CHURCH (HOZIER COVER)

Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” is a massive pop hit and one of the best musical stories of 2014. It was nominated for Song of the Year, not that the Grammy’s mean anything, but still. The song has a huge mainstream appeal, much to the surprise of the Irish man who wrote it. And now British diva Ellie Goulding has put her stamp on it in a brand new cover. I’m guessing Andrew never saw that coming either.

Goulding’s version of this song is a more downtempo, trance-y affair. Gone is the bombast of the original, replaced by smooth synths and Goulding’s translucent vocals. The end result is a more mellow and intimate feel. Somehow Ms. Goulding made this song even more palatable for an adult-contemporary radio.
