BEST NEW SONGS: VIOLENT FEMMES - LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE
The mother fluffing Violent Femmes are back with their first new song in a decade and a half. You probably know them as the band that sings “Blister in the Sun,” but they actually have other songs too. “Love Love Love Love Love” is technically the band’s first song in 15 years, although their last album, Freak Magnet, was actually finished in 1998, so an argument can be made it’s actually their first new song in 17 years, yet I digress.
“Love Love Love Love Love” is the first cut we’ve heard off the Violent Femmes forthcoming Happy New Year EP, a four-track offering that’ll be released on Record Store Day. The title comes from the fact that all the songs were recorded on New Year's Eve in Hobart, Tasmania. I don’t know about y’all, but that certainly beats the shit out of my NYE.
The first two things that jump out at you when listening to “Love Love Love Love Love” is that Gordon Gano’s voice has barely changed at all and the band has not lost their ability to craft a perfectly catchy alternative song. It actually sounds like the Violent Femmes doing a Jonathan Richman cover, which might be all I ever wanted from music.
Gano and Co. are set to tour the US this summer with the Bare Naked Ladies. Listen below so you can start to decide if they’re going to be getting your hard-earned cash come June.
