BEST NEW SONGS: SUN CLUB - TROPICOLLER LEASE
It continues to be an optimal time not to be black in Baltimore. The city’s recent hot streak with indie bands (AnCo, Future Islands, Beach House, etc.) looks to continue as well with Sun Club, who come out of the womb fully-formed with some kick ass jams like "Tropicoller Lease."
These four dudes come from a grunge and metal background, which obviously informs their take on the indie jangle pop they’re now putting out, especially when it comes to the percussions. “Tropicoller Lease” is abrupt and jarring instantly, and remains that way for all of ten seconds before dissolving into layers of infectious goodness. This track has a strange and fun undercurrent that runs through its core. It never takes you where you quite expect, but it’s a fantastic journey. Choral vocals rise and fall throughout, all the while a guitar hook that seems to be holding on to last remnants of the summer propels things forward.
There’s a pun about ‘a club you’re gonna want to join’ trying to work its way out of me, but I’m gonna bury it and just tell you to listen to this song instead.
SUN CLUB “TROPICOLLER LEASE”
Sun Club’s debut LP, The Dongo Durango, is out October 30th on ATO Records. The dudes are currently on the road in support of The Districts. If the rest of that LP is this good, that bill should absolutely be flipped. And “Funeral Beds” is my shit.
