BEST OF INDIE POP - WEEK 35
Summer is officially over, not really, my phone is still reading above 90 degree temperatures … but according to Starbucks basic biatches can bust out their fugly boots because the pumpkin spice latte is back. While I’m no basic I may or may not be a little bit more wired than usual as I write today’s Best of Indie Pop column because I'm on the pumpkin liquid crack. As for the rest of you, let’s get you feeling good with the following songs from Boehm, The 1975, NOTD, and more.
YOE MASE - FALLING
We’re kicking things off nice and slow for you with some of the sweetest beats from producer Yoe Mase. With an uplifting rhythm and accompanying vocals from wife Jackie, “Falling” easily becomes one of this week’s favorite songs. It’s a love song with deep emotions that makes falling in love with this track easy.
BOEHM - COOL KIDZ
Romian producer has delivered the perfect track to end summer. Thanks to the mellow vibes driving a piano synth melody we all feel like part of the cool kid crowd. The signature style behind Boehm’s original “Cool Kidz” is what wet dreams are made of. Keep an eye on this cool cat as he’s getting ready to remix some hits from Aoki, The Chainsmokers, and more.
NOTD - BEEN THERE DONE THAT FT TOVE STYRKE
I’m a sucker for pop songs about being a sucker in love, but an even bigger sucker for scandi-pop, and today duo NOTD along with Tove Styrke deliver a production so good it will have you up off your bum and dancing to the infectious beat.
RUSS - THE FLUTE SONG
Russ is mad talent and all but them flutists stole the show. The composure, the formation, the sycnhed steps … as a former flutist it’s hard to bounce to an 808 while blowing a tune. Mad props to all.
THE 1975 - TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME
The 1975 have released a video for their second single “TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME” from their upcoming album A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, and like all things the band seems to be doing, this one is unsurprisingly different. The tropical upbeat track makes this single the most poppy track of theirs to date. Enjoy the colorful video above.
BLOOD ORANGE - SAINT
The self directed video for “Saint,” fresh off Blood Orange’s latest album Negro Swan, invites us in to what seems to be his Hynes’ home studio. As Hynes tickles the keys on the keyboard and beats on the drum we see some key people like model and face of Negro Swan Kai the black angel, designer Ana Kras, amongst others just chilling, enjoying some pizza, and watching Hyne’s do his thing. Not sure of the significance of their prescence but I can assume they are considered saints in Hynes’ book.
JAIRA BURNS - LOW KEY IN LOVE
I swear, Jaira Burns has one of those voices that can undress you the moment the first chord comes out. In “Low Key In Love” we see Burns transition from lyrics of heartbreak and pain to a new found love. Confidently pouring her emotions Jaira Burns turns over a new leaf in what we hope means more recognition. This girl is boiling hot and she’s about to explode.
ERTHLINGS - BRIDGES
The four piece female alt pop band Erthlings formed by Issy, Jessame, Taylor and Lissa, are giving us groovy 80s inspired vibes with their debut single “Bridges.” The Sydney teens sound has stays balanced through from beginning to end giving room for every piece to brilliantly shine. From vocals, to bass, to drums, to guitar, this one will easily playing on repeat all day today.
EVES KARYDAS - DAMN LOYAL
Geez, and to think I was about to skip over this gem. Eves Karydas’ “Damn Loyal” is damn breathtaking. Off her debut album, summerskin, out 28th September, “Damn Loyal” gives is a taste of what sounds like a breakthrough star in the making. Keep your ears on those pipes because with music like this it’ll be no surprise if we see her topping the charts.
NUSSY - LIGHTS GO OUT
For fans of pop artist Robyn, turn your attention to Australian indie artist Nussy, she’ll will have you bobbing your head to the catchy melody of “Lights Go Out.” Though the song is about a turbulent romantic fight, there is a feeling empowerment and nothing will break me kind of attitude.

Thanks for tuning in. As always we will be back for more. Until then we’ll be around prepping for our big show. Speaking of show … you can win tickets to see jesse saint john, PPL MVR, MXMS, and us. More on that here.
Beca Arredondo is easily unamused with all things not related to her interests. On her good days you can catch her avoiding the California sun and glued to her Mac plotting the next big thing. If you happen to run into her on the street and notice her wearing headphones do NOT disturb her. She is not responsible for any possible damage. Aside from the above she's very sweet and perky and responds well to good music and food.
