BEST OF INDIE POP - WEEK 7
Would it be shocking to say that the Grammys was a hot mess? No, of course not? Well that’s because we’ve come to expect um ...how do you say …. I better not say. Sure it had its great moments like H.E.R. and Cardi B winning awards but I’m just glad it’s all wrapped up and we can finally move on to next year’s nominee predictions. I have all my money on the artists featured in today’s Best of Indie Pop post. Take a minute or two or perhaps an hour to soak up this week’s music roundup feat Kehlani, iyla, Normani, Icona Pop, and more.
KEHLANI - BUTTERFLY
LIke a beautiful butterfly that hypnotizes you when it spreads its wings wide, Kehlani grabs your attention with a somber lullaby that is as bewitching as the strength of the butterfly. The single appropriately titled “Butterfly” is taken from her upcoming mixtape While We Wait, dropping soon.
NORMANI & 6LACK - WAVES
This woman is on fire! Normani comes at us with relentless non-stop winning tracks. “Waves” featuring 6lack shows off her talent of writing, producing, and directing. If this doesn’t win people over then my hope in humanity is lost and I’m packing my bags and moving to the planet of Normani.
KIM PETRAS - 1,2,3 DAYZ UP (FEAT SOPHIE)
We totes agree with Sebastián from YouTube:
wig: snatched
me: in a party with jesus
kim petras: did that
A$AP ROCKY - KIDS TURNED OUT FINE
Oh my bad. I meant to post this sooner but I got caught up posting other hits. But before another week goes by … I give you “Kids turned Out Fine” by the delicious A$AP Rocky. The psychedelic trip he sends listeners and viewers on in his video for the single is a whole heck of a lot better than the reality we live in.
ALMA - WHEN I DIE
Who’s a bad a$$?! Alma that’s who. She’s got life all figured out that she’s moved on to bigger things like planning her funeral. When I go down I’ll have “When I Die” blasting in the background and it will be mandatory that everyone dances.
R3HAB & ICONA POP - THIS IS HOW WE PARTY
Ever since Icona Pop crashed their car into a bridge they’ve been non stop partying. Without wasting time or skipping a beat they’ve collabed with hitmaker booty shaker R3HAB on “This Is How We Party.” For those struggling to get things going blast this one loud and let the music do it’s thing to your body.
JOSH PAN - UNDEFEATED
Josh Pan is a special kind of breed as we clearly see in the video above for his single “Undefeated.” What makes this track extra nice and special is not that fact that I have a fetish for snakes and that Josh Pan just so happens to morph into a snake, it’s what Pan had to say about the track, “When I wrote this song had just realized that life is nice when you appreciate where you are and what you have. the grass always looks greener on the other side, but it’s already pretty green on this one, too.” <3
BAZZI - 3:15
Though it comes off sounding similar to “Beautiful” I have no complaints about Bazzi’s a quarter after three track. And you know what else? I nominate Bazzi for Artist of the year responsible for baby making. Who here seconds that nomination? Just his voice alone is enough to sizzle things up.
IYLA - JUICE
Iyla’s video for her track “Juice” is ...wait for it … juicy. Like those satisfying videos you stumble on YouTube, the visuals for “Juice” will put your mind at ease and take your mood from zero to sixty within seconds of clicking play above. Iyla leaves us salivating for more. We’ll be here waiting patiently with “Juice” on repeat.
KHALID - TALK
Khalid is like super star status … obviously. The fact that he has a track perfect for every moood and situation in life is like hello … shut up and take my money. Why should I ever try to say anything when I could simply let Khalid do the talking for me with his music? With the help of Disclosure, Khalid “Talk” has officially left more in love with him than ever before.

With that we conclude our pop playlist this week, but if you’re craving more music gems head on over to Spotify where we update our Indie Pop Playlist in the regular. I’m actually doing that now as I type. See ya all next week!

Beca Arredondo is easily unamused with all things not related to her interests. On her good days you can catch her avoiding the California sun and glued to her Mac plotting the next big thing. If you happen to run into her on the street and notice her wearing headphones do NOT disturb her. She is not responsible for any possible damage. Aside from the above she's very sweet and perky and responds well to good music and food.
