BEST OF INDIE POP - WEEK 3

1/16/20

And now, we interrupt your weekday to bring you an indie pop playlist so clutch that you’ll want to come back for seconds. This week’s installment of We Are: The Guards' hand picked curated songs will inspire you to dance, to sing, to follow, and to repeat. And hey, if they don’t it was at least fun for us filtering through different playlists and music sites looking for the handful of audible gems. This week we’re highlighting new music from Missy Elliott, Conan Gray, Mayer Hawthorne, and more. Stick around and tell us what you liked.

GREEN DAY - OH YEAH!

At 100 years old Green Day still has what it takes to keep the flame going. “Oh Yeah!” is just another way the trio is letting us know that dads are cool. Yes dads, because either you’re one now and still rockin to anything Green Day puts out or you are young enough to rock out to a band your dad used to and still rocks out to in the car on his way to work.

KEISZA - WHEN BOYS CRY

Is 2020 the year Keisza will get the attention she deserves? Oh do I hope so. Just listen to this jam. “When Boys Cry” is catchy and will have you bouncing and singing along as the sleigh bells keep this tune light hearted.

MAYER HAWTHORNE - HEALING

A big thanks to Mayer Hawthorne for keeping things weird and funky in his single “Healing.” To quote his lyrics, this bowl full of funk soul is “extraordinarily healing.” Jump on this space adventure with Mayer Hawthorne if you’re in need of some TLC.

EDEN - ISOHEL

Eden takes you to another level of Nirvana in his slow burner “isohel.” Don’t be surprised if this tune tugs at your heart. The indie artist was quoted saying “The song ‘isohel’ is about wishing the best for the people you’ve left behind but knowing that you’re probably better off where you are now.” Damn!

THUNDER CAT - BLACK QUALLS FEAT. STEVE LACEY & STEVE ARRINGTON

With a banana in one hand and looking rather fly in the freshest Trader Joes outfit, Thundercat comes at us sounding as funky and as awesome as his outfit. “Black Qualls” enlists Steve Lacey and Steve Arrington, their contribution to this track adds a nostalgic sound that hits the right feels. The single was announced to form part of Thundercats upcoming It Is What It Is, out April 3rd.

GNASH - HUNGOVER & I MISS U

Talk about a song that tears your heart out. Leave it to gnash to remind you that yes, things can get in fact worse and that yes, you can actually feel crappier than what you’re currently feeling. “hungover & i miss u” is your reminder that you do suck.

THE 1975 - ME & YOU TOGETHER SONG

The perfect love song for bea this V-Day is brought to you by The 1975. “Me & You Together” might very well be the ultimate indie love song this year. I say this year because there have been some pretty epic love songs in the past...you can check those out here.

MISSY ELLIOTT - WHY I STILL LOVE YOU

Missy is legendary. This woman literally can do no wrong. “Why I Still Love You,” is why we still love Missy. The music video follows Missy Elliot through the different music eras as she sings through them all with her girl band. Watch and fall in love.

CONAN GRAY - THE STORY

It is with confidence that I write that Conan Gray will see bigger audience views in the near future. He has the voice, the melodies, the looks, and the YouTube cred to take him to stardom level. It’s just a matter of waiting for that right song to drop at the right moment and be heard by the right person.

LAUV - TATTOOS TOGETHER

Geez … Lauv’s dance moves are uncomparable to any one of those that I’ve ever seen before. Quirky and odd, but perhaps that’s what love moves you to do. In “Tattoos Together” Lauv prays that the love he has will last until heaven, and a good way to guarantee that it will is to get hipster matching tattoo because nothing in this world says your love will last forever. Kids, please don’t get tattoos with your partner, learn from case study Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson.

Until Next week. See you with more indie pop songs.
