BEST EDM - WEEK 17 2014
That's me above with my festival fam after we went HARD at Big Gigantic at Coachella this weekend.
So… sorry this is late. I was at Coachella weekend 2 (the better weekend to go, btw) and saw a whole fucking bunch of amazing music (Nicolas Jaar, Big Gigantic, Bicep, RL Grime, Flight Facilities, Fatboy Slim…U want me to keeping going? Um okay… Lee Burridge, Dillon Francis, OPIUO, Ruff Hauser, Outkast… More? Really? Eh, I can't really think of anything else. I'm tired and thinking is hard.
I came home yesterday and passed the fuck out. I was lucky to even make the drive home (all it took was two red bulls, some adderrall and constant conversation). My brain was working at about 6% yesterday. But now I'm rested and alive and it's at about 45% right now. At least I can write some song blurbs.
UPPERMOST - EVOLUTION
Uppermost is a tricky killer of a dude. This isn't the first time a fantastic album full of banging french electro has just silently popped up on his soundcloud and made me go, "oh shit this is good."
Oh shit this is good.
TIESTO - WASTED FEAT. MATTHEW KOMA
The drop of this song is the exact same as "young wild and free" by Snoop and Wiz. Listen to the songs back to back -- they're the same. Tiesto and Matthew Koma are going to make a lot of money off this song and it's going to get played everywhere. The message here is pretty deplorable though. Come the fuck on, Tiesto, you're an adult. Start acting like one maybe? Jus a little?
DUCK SAUCE - NRG
Duck Sauce are the official Kings of Disco this summer. They came out of the gate swinging in the past ten days. An album release and two headlining slots at Coachella's Sahara tent. NRG is such a wonderful lead single off this new album and it was a pleasure to hear it out this weekend. Or did I? Was I even at this set? There was a giant duck on stage at some point, I promise.
CHROMEO - JEALOUS (I AIN'T WITH IT) DILLON FRANCIS
Give Dillon Francis indie dance to remix and he's going to knock it out of the fucking moomballpark. It's just what he does. It also helps that Oliver co-produced the original mix of this track and it's the single best song Chromeo has made so far. I missed Chromeo at Coachella but I flat out don't miss Dillon Francis so I definitely heard this shit. It sounds beautiful on a big ass system.
ALEX METRIC & OLIVER - GALAXY
Last week I posted the other Alex Metric & Oliver collaboration from Alex Metric's new EP. While Hope takes both of the dude's techno sensibilities to task, Galaxy lets them chill in what they do best -- making ze dark disco. This song sounds like it belongs on Todd Terje's album and in nightclubs for the next 14-15 months. PLEASE keep making music together, guys.
FIGURE - INFINITE LIVES
Cool sounds, cool ideas, lots of bass. I appreciate the dudes like Figure that were some of the biggest dubstep producers in the game have begun to shy away from the dubstep sounds. Those sounds all started to become so generic, and it's cool to see the quality producers upping their games by keeping their sounds so fresh.
MADISON AVENUE - DON'T CALL ME BABY (TOMMIE SUNSHINE & DISCO FRIES REMIX)
Groovy lil summer disco from Tommie Sunshine and Disco Fries. Can't argue with that. According to their soundcloud, this is from 2011 and the guys all listened to it again and were like, "This is good enough to release. Why did we never release it? Are we fucking idiots? Let's release it." And they did.
PERCUSSIONS - SEXT
Four Tet is releasing new music under the alias Percussions. I like it a lot. It starts off with a very simple and minimal beat like Fout Tet does best. But it sounds clubbier than anything Four Tet has done in the past. It builds into a fun vocal sample and then it finally lets go back into the same beat. I can't wait to get to to this out. I'm sure when it comes back in on a big system everybody is gonna go wild. I'm glad he went the alter ego path with this, allowing Four Tet to live alone as Four Tet and this to live on as something cool and exciting and new.
THIEF - CLOSER (CESARE REMIX)
Not enough electronic music is gentle. Electronic music constructed by Bon Iver. Sweet house vibes, beautiful vocals. Your girlfriend is gonna like this song.
MAX MAIE - CLAUDIUS (MARVIN GAYE VOCAL MIX)
CAJMERE - FRANKIE KNUCKLES TRIBUTE MIX
RIP Frankie Knuckles, right? The Godfather of House Music passed away and we saw posts and articles about it from every DJ, Producer and Blog in the game. Cajmere chose to celebrate his life by making a half an hour mix that encompasses all of what house music is about. Fun, lively, happy. Let's dance and remember the man that brought ALL this beautiful shit to our ears. Thanks Frankie. Thanks Cajmere.

Until next week bbz. I promise I'll be on time next week. This being late shit is for the birds. I ain't no fucking bird. I'm a fucking human.

About Kurt Kroeber
From deep within the murky depths of the Los Angeles River emerged a creature: 50% raver, 50% comedian, 10% Robotcop. Kurt Kroeber doesn’t own a dog, operates Soundbleed (the world’s only dance party comedy talk show rave), and is down to party with you. Come up some time and say “Hey dude!” But definitely make sure to casually drop the secret Illuminati password.
