BEST NEW INDIE POP: MADGE - FIGHT OR FLIGHT CLUB

2/19/18

Fun facts about this next artist: she was raised Mormon and also with a classical music upbringing. According to her, both of these aspects from her life have heavily influenced the way she creates music today.

Madge is now located in LA, and from the sounds of her debut single -- which was mixed, written, and ALL self-produced -- her life has been a wild ride. Listen to the exuberant and hyper-pop track, “Fight or Flight Club” below.

MADGE - FIGHT OR FLIGHT CLUB

“Fight or Fight Club” is reminiscent of early Grimes tracks; there’s the lo-fi electronic feel and the numerous twists and turns into the eccentric. There is no loftiness here, though: the pop music that Madge is making is combative with streaks of glitter across the track. The chorus, for instance, sounds like an astral loop-de-loop that eventually leads to a violin solo you didn’t think would fit into the tune until you heard it. (Sidebar: let’s add more string solos to pop tracks, yeah?)

When it comes to the lyrics, “quirky” might be an understatement. The song’s title probably speaks for itself, and no, she’s not exactly talking about Brad Pitt’s best film of all time. But if anything, the aggressive (and a little masochistic?) content adds weight to Madge’s promise that she’s not out here trying to make cookie-cutter pop tunes. By far.

As I said, “Fight or Fight Club” is Madge’s rather ambitious debut single, and it’s a….wait for it… you know it’s coming…. KNOCKOUT. (Sorry, guys.)

Stay tuned, because from Madge’s mouth herself, she’s got even weirder things coming. I’m excited!
